Smithsonian plans on posting entire collection online

That's right. The Smithsonian Institution is planning to post all 137 million pieces in its collection on the web. In a plan to target young people by expanding its outreach program to schools, video game experts and web site designers will be working alongside museum curators to promote the Smithsonian through an engaging, dynamic online experience.

There is no word on the cost of this project. Field trips are on a downtrend with two main reasons, No Child Left Behind (High focus on Math & Reading) and high gas prices. The CNN article states, "Some museums are going out of their way to prove their programs tie in with state education standards...Museum leaders also are increasingly focused on digitizing their online collections, despite its expense..."
